5 Things I've Realised in 2016

5 Things I've Realised in 2016
11 January 2017
Read post

Was 2016 the best year for me? No. Was it the worst year for me? No. For me, 2016 really was the year of "realising stuff", as Kylie Jenner so famously put it. I realised and learnt many things, from life, to love, to family. I've grown as a person, both mentally and physically, but I've also realised I still have a lot more growing to do in 2017, mentally.

I told myself in 2015 that I'd make a lot of changes towards my outlook on life in 2016, but the truth is, I'm still making silly mistakes, I'm still getting myself worked up over the pettiest of things, and I'm still allowing my worries to get the better of me. I've continued to put myself down, let people use me and take me for granted, and constantly avoided putting myself first.

Whilst I know that I haven't grown as much as I would have liked to, or should have, I can't dismiss the fact that there are many things I've learnt in the year of 2016, 5 of which I've written about in this post, and I've come a long way from 2015. I've grown in some ways, and that's something to be proud of. But I look forward to learning and growing a lot more in 2017, for my own sake.

1. It's okay to do things on your own

2016 was the year I realised I am so over the same old conversation.

"What did you do today?"

"Oh, I went shopping"

"Who with?"

"...myself..."

"Oh...you went out alone? Did you not have anyone to go with?"

Yes, friend/brother/colleague, I went out alone. But this year I've learnt that it's perfectly acceptable to go out on your own, despite what some people may think. Going out shopping or eating lunch on your own doesn't necessarily mean you're alone. It also doesn't mean that you couldn't find anyone who wanted to go out with you. I decide to go out on my own. In fact, I think it feels pretty liberating when you take trains on your own, and go shopping on your own, and sit in a restaurant and eat lunch or dinner on your own. I even tend to go to London on my own, and to be honest, it feels great. It feels refreshing to have some time completely to yourself to unwind, take in the environment around you, and to focus solely on yourself.

2. Life is short, and incredibly fragile

It's so cliche. But I really have learnt this year that life is short and fragile. You have to make the most of every single second, because you just don't know what's round the corner. An old friend of mine lost her dad during the summer at the age of 47 from a heart attack. My aunt had a brain haemorrhage in September and was in hospital for 6 weeks. And do I even have to name the many people that passed away in 2016?! We spend too much time moaning about the smallest things, when we should start appreciating the fact that we are living in a world where others aren't as fortunate as we are. There are so many opportunities and incredible things to discover, and it's about time we grab those opportunities with both hands and appreciate the things we have and the things we are yet to discover.

3. If you want people to believe in you, you have to believe in yourself first

This is a big one for me. I get so ridiculously anxious, and I allow that anxiety to prevent me from doing things that could really benefit me and help me grow as a person. There have been many times in 2016 where I have allowed my worries to build a wall and tower above me, but there have also been a few times where I've allowed myself to smash right through that wall and tell my worries to fuck off. In June, I interned at The Sun's Fabulous Magazine in London after meeting with the Editor in Chief and persuading him to let me intern there to gain some experience in journalism. He so kindly gave me the opportunity, and I commuted into the great city every day for a week, all by myself. I've never felt so proud. I allowed myself to come out of my shell and forget about all the doubts I had in my head. I believed in myself, and that self-belief allowed others to believe in me, too. That's the important thing. You really do have to believe in yourself first if you want other people to believe in you too.

"Without self-belief, nothing can be accomplished. With it, nothing is impossible." - Felix Dennis

"True self-belief grants the most powerful ally you could ever have; yourself." - Anon

4. It's best not to force friendships if they're no longer there

There are a handful of people I've left in 2016. Not because we've fallen out, or because I dislike them in any way, but because I'm done wasting my time putting effort into friendships that are quite obviously no longer there. Going back to my 'life is too short' speech, on one hand, life is too short to hold grudges and have arguments/beef with people, but on the other hand, life is also too short to waste time on people who aren't worth it. It's too short to hold on to people who don't want to be held onto. It's too short to not say how you feel about people, whether what you say is good or bad. In 2016, I realised that it was time to let go of friendships that became non-existent. Whilst the decision to do that is difficult, it also allows a heavy weight to be lifted off your shoulders.

5. Don't expect things to happen, make them happen

In 2016 I finished sixth form, which was one of the best moments of 2016 because I absolutely hated sixth form. I was looking forward to making loads of plans and doing so many different things, but other than a few trips to London and a family holiday that I go on every year, nothing really happened. And, why? Because I expected good and exciting things to just happen. But that's not how it works, and I don't know why it took me so long to realise! Great things don't just happen because you have to make them happen. Book holidays and city breaks, arrange shopping trips and travel days with friends, see your family. We can't just sit around and wait for a great opportunity to arise because, unfortunately, that rarely happens.

I hope you all had a great and insightful 2016; here's to more learning, growing, and discovering in 2017!

Although Thanks-Giving isn't a holiday we celebrate in the UK, I thought it was appropriate to share a few thank you's that I owe to some people. It may inspire you to go out and thank someone, too.

So, thankyou....

to the girls who screwed me over
You made me realise that I'd rather go through life with one or two amazing friends, instead of a group of fake friends who do nothing but put me down. So, thank you for walking away from me. Thank you for bringing me down more than you brought me up. Because I've developed thicker skin, the motivation and drive to be successful and happy, and the ability to walk away from a situation that will never do me any good.

to my aunt
You do more than you realise for my mum, brother and I. You show us so much love and appreciation, and you help us without needing to be asked. Not only that, but you've helped me realise what I want to do with my life, and your success and shown me how successful I want to be, too. So, thank you for being the best aunt a niece could have, and thank you for always helping us and inspiring me.

to my mum
You haven't had it easy, and that's an understatement. There are times when you definitely struggle, especially as a single parent, but everything you do for my brother and I is greatly appreciated. I don't say thank you enough, but thank you for always standing by us, and helping us achieve our goals. Thank you for guiding us through life and raising us so well. Thank you for being the strong, caring woman that you are. I am eternally grateful.

to my dad
You show so much love to me and my brother. You irritate me at times, and you drive me up the wall..but you've helped me and my brother do things that we probably couldn't have done without you. Thank you for allowing us the opportunities to exceed as individuals, Thank you for being proud of us everyday. And thank you for always believing in us.

to my brother
Although you are the biggest pain in the arse, you are my life-long friend. Thank you for always making me laugh when I've had a rough day or I'm in a bad mood and nothing else manages to make me laugh. Thank you for being someone I will always be able to count on when somebody turns their back on me.

to my best friend
We only met two years ago, but I feel like I've known you forever. Thank you for being the most incredible friend when I've been hurt, angry, upset, or all of the above. Thank you for making laugh till my stomach literally aches. Thank you for being so trustworthy and loyal, and allowing me to feel like I can talk to you about absolutely anything. Thank you for being my best friend when I thought I'd never make new friends. Thank you, so much, for being the hilarious, caring, kind-hearted person that you are.

to my manager
Thank you for giving me my first job back in October of 2014. Not only did you give me a job that I desperately needed, but by giving me this job, you helped me become more confident. Before getting this job, I never would have imagined that I could speak to new people. I never would have imagined that I could laugh and smile through difficult times. So, thank you for allowing me to gradually come out of my shell. Thank you for giving an anxious little 16-year-old the chance to earn her own money and earn back some of the confidence she lost.

I fell in love instantly when I saw the new AW16 Peace + Love Collection from Missguided. I'm totally obsessing over the Balmain vibes this collection is giving me, and the detailing in each piece looks amazing. From sequins to lace, and studs to satin, the collection is sophisticated and sexy and there are so many pieces I want to get my hands on! I've compiled a selection of my favourite pieces from the collection below for you to look through. Happy lusting!

This screams Balmain to me, but without the price tag! Just look at the gold sequin and stud detailing!

Can't go wrong with a nude dress; especially with silver detailing like this one.

The gold studded detailing on this dress gives me life.

This dress has got to be my favourite from the collection. Black, fitting, and fish net? SLAYYYYY.

I'm obsessed with the black lace detailing and the splash of red in the rose stitching.

The colour just speaks to me.

This is beyond sexy and sophisticated.

I'm love the military-style of this navy wrap dress!

Never did I think I'd be attracted to a peach dress. But come on, look at it!

Faux suede and fringe detailing? Yes please.

Jeans are something I tend to buy from one brand only and I'm always happy to invest in a decent, not-so-cheap pair. I do not own multiple brands of jeans, and New Look have always been my go-to for my endless supply. They don't rip on the inside of the thigh, they always fit perfectly, and they're flattering in all the right places. I tend to stick to one brand of jeans because I know how they wear. However, just recently, I began buying Topshop jeans for two reasons; 1- the never-ending amount of different styles and shades of denim, and 2- I've heard so many people rave about them. After seeing my best friend in a gorgeous pair of ripped Mom jeans that looked amazing on her, I had to invest in a pair.

I know that I have been totally MIA over the last few months, but I've had so much going on! I completed my A Levels, I've been really anxious and stressed out, and I got to a point where I felt like my blog wasn't going anywhere. I've felt like nobody cares to read what I write and it was bringing me down, so I stopped posting on my blog and eventually stopped posting on my Instagram account all together..

I recently purchased the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Definer from Beauty Bay after having my eye on it for quite some time. I've used the Dipbrow before in Dark Brown and, whilst I liked the formula, I much preferred using a pencil so I went back to my Maybelline eyebrow pencil. However, after feeling a bit down in the dumps and needing a pick-me-up, I decided to treat myself to some new makeup, and this was the first thing I purchased.

It's fair to say that I have absolutely hated college, and most certainly disliked school in general. I understand that many under-privileged children would love to go to school and get an education, and therefore I am appreciative of the fact we get a free education. However, my school and college years have been completely blighted by nasty, bitchy girls, and I know that everybody has their fair share of incidents with these catty creatures. Nevertheless, the girls who have brought me down and made me feel completely and utterly useless have taught me many things.

Diary | Treat Yo' Self!

So recently I've been feeling a bit anxious and stressed out, and all together just fed up with people's shit. I live in a small area where everybody knows each other, which means everybody knows each other's business. And the people in this area are so unbelievably toxic. SO, I decided to treat myself because I sat and thought to myself, I bloody deserve it! I grabbed the computer and went straight to Zara, House of Fraser, Beauty Bay and Feelunique and spent a bit (a lot) of money on myself. And you know what? It felt fucking good.

I'm obsessing over so many pieces from ASOS at the moment, and I say obsessing rather than purchasing because I can't bloody afford to spend out on a shit load of stuff from ASOS because I have so many other things to pay for this month. And considering I've spent way too much already since getting paid four days ago (!!), I've resulted in creating an ASOS wishlist instead of leaving myself with absolutely no money. Happy browsing!

So as a new segment on my blog, I'm going go be including 'Diary' entries, of some sort. I, for one, am not the only person in the blogging world who happens to compare herself to pretty much 95% of the blogging community: It goes without saying that we all compare ourselves to someone or something in one way or another. We scroll through Tumblr and Instagram admiring the lives of celebrities and bloggers who appear to have the most perfect lives, sunning it up on golden beaches in Thailand, strutting down the streets of London with their Givenchy handbags in a pair of Valentinos, and looking as glamorous as ever, what appears to be, 24/7. Even on a daily basis, we compare our grades to others, and our work ethic to other colleagues.

My name is Megan Céline Nash and I'm a 5'2 Essex-born fashion enthusiast. No, I don't know Joey Essex or any of the TOWIE lot personally, and I don't go to Sugar Hut every weekend. (In fact, I've never been...)

I'd be lying if I said I'm not sassy or sarcastic in the slightest....

I could do with going to the gym more often, taking less pictures, and saving more money....but YOLO, right?

I have a shopping addiction that needs to be treated, as well as a tendency to give advice to others but never follow it myself..

I'm short, brunette, and a little anxious, but I have a massive heart, I'm a sick small spoon, I love hugs and I make a mean stack of pancakes! I laugh a lot (usually at my own jokes) and I have the most annoying laugh(s) ever.

I don't drink coffee - I know right, am I even worthy of being a blogger? - and I think milk is the work of Satan.

I dream of becoming a fashion/lifestyle magazine journalist, living in London with dogs as children, and travelling the world. More than anything, my aspiration in life is to be genuinely happy and content with my life. I believe I will end up doing what I'm meant to do, where I'm meant to be, and who I'm meant to be with.

I hope you enjoy me, my opinions, and my stories, and I hope I can be someone you can relate to in some way or another..
